The first Peruvian film shot entirely in the indigenous Aymara language, Óscar Catacora’s award-winning film Wiñaypacha tells the story of an elderly couple named Willka and Phaxsi (Sun and Moon) living in a remote part of the rugged Andes mountains. Like the elderly couple in Yasujirō Ozu’s Tokyo Story, the pair stoically face the challenges of daily life while waiting for the return of their son Antuku, who has migrated to the city.

Based on the lives of the filmmaker’s maternal grandparents—his paternal grandfather plays the role of Willka—and drawing extensively from Aymara culture and cosmology, Wiñaypacha is an accomplished debut feature with magnificent cinematography, as well as an exciting addition to the vibrant, growing body of Latin American cinema featuring indigenous communities.

Wiñaypacha was Óscar Catacora’s feature film debut and his second last work, due to his passing away.
