Elvira, living in the far too small Unjárga, wants to be more than a Sámi. Despite the open landscape, life feels cramped, and it doesn’t get any easier when her mother’s girlfriend moves in and a major social media influencer in the area tries to collect woke-points from Elvira’s family situation. This also happened to Elvira’s father, an internationally known Danish actor who is her ticket to Copenhagen and the world. Until suddenly a jailbird appears in a tent on a meadow 154 meters away from the house.
The film had its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in 2024, and has toured several different film festivals, and was nominated for a European Film Award.
Biru Unjárga is a surprising, lively and funny coming-of-age film about identity, woke culture, expectations and the right to find your way, both away and home – whoever you are.
The film is the first feature film by Norwegian Sámi, Egil Pedersen.
